Hot Tub Safety Basics
A hot tub is relaxing, but a few rules keep it that way. The CDC advises keeping the water at or below 104°F (40°C).
Don’t drink alcohol before or during a soak. Children under 5 shouldn’t use hot tubs.
If you’re pregnant, talk to your health care provider before using one. Older CPSC guidance suggested a 100°F maximum for pregnant women.
Test the water with strips. CDC suggests chlorine of at least 3 ppm or bromine of 4 to 8 ppm, with a pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Shower before you get in, and stay out if you have diarrhea.
