As a plus sized woman, I know the struggle of trying to lose weight, especially around the midsection. Losing weight around your stomach is one of the hardest places to see any results.
There are many “get quick results” methods out there, such as supplements, crash diets, and waist trainers. At first, I was hesitant to try plus size waist training.
Then I thought to myself, what do I have to lose?
The answer was: I had nothing but weight to lose.
I had never used plus size waist trainers before, so I didn’t have any idea what I was looking for in a plus size waist trainer.
A quick online search helped me realize that they weren’t that different from the waist cinchers and smoothers I was using anyway whenever I wore a form-fitting outfit to hide my rolls.
The only difference was, these waist cinchers promised to help me sweat more during my workouts. I was skeptical, but I was willing to try it. I tried five different kinds of plus size waist trainers, which I’ve reviewed below.
What Waist Trainers Can and Can’t Do
A waist trainer can shape your silhouette while you wear it. It can’t permanently shrink your waist or burn belly fat.
According to Cleveland Clinic, any weight loss is temporary, mostly because the squeeze makes you eat less. Extra sweat is water, and it comes back when you drink.
Tight compression can make it hard to breathe deeply, squeeze your organs, and worsen acid reflux. Latex can irritate skin, and anyone with a latex allergy should avoid it.
Think of these as shapewear for the occasional outfit, not a weight-loss tool.
Hopefully, if you’re interested in trying one, this review will help you make a decision.
Our Top Picks for a Plus Size Waist Trainer
Camellia’s Corsets Women’s 26 Steel Boned Heavy Duty Waist Trainer Corset Shaper for Weight Loss
While I tried this waist trainer in plus size, it comes in all sizes for those who want to try it.
Pros
It’s more than a waist cincher: the steel boning gives some posture support and a slimmer look under clothes.
If you’ve recently had a baby, ask your doctor before wearing any compression garment, especially after a C-section.
I liked that I could wear it under my clothes as a waist slimmer.
In the meantime, I just added an extra pair of laces and removed them when I didn’t need the extra length anymore.
This is a very well-made plus size waist trainer. It was more breathable than the latex models, and I could tell the difference in the way I carried myself while wearing it.
The scale didn’t change in any lasting way because of the corset. Any quick drop from sweating is water weight.
Cons
My only complaint is the laces weren’t long enough for me to lace myself up properly the first few times I wore it.
I have a large waist, so even though I bought the right size, the laces just weren’t quite long enough for me to get the maximum cinching I wanted.
This problem corrected itself within a few uses because the material began to form to my body.
Lover Beauty Women’s Latex Underbust Corset Waist Training Cincher 9 Steel Boned
I liked this plus size waist training corset because it was so durable and flexible at the same time.
The steel bones move to form to your body and add some structure.
Another thing I liked was the three rows of clasps in the front, which let you adjust the fit.
It visibly slims your waistline while you wear it, and the effect ends when you take it off.
The latex made me sweat more than Camellia’s cotton model. The inside has a cotton lining, which feels better against the skin.
Size up from the brand’s chart if you’re between sizes. A trainer that’s too tight can restrict breathing.
Like the Camellia model, this corset is also made to be worn under your clothes as a waist cincher. I tried it this way too, and I was very pleased with the results.
I have a lot of dresses that are made of polyester, so you can see my rolls underneath them. The latex on the outside of this waist cincher makes the polyester in my dresses lay very nicely and I looked great in them.
My favorite characteristic of the Lover Beauty model was that it only covered my stomach: it stopped below my chest and above my pant line. This way, I can take it off easily if I needed to and not have the feeling of wearing a full bodysuit.
This model held up very well. It breathed less easily than the Camellia model, so I wouldn’t wear it for long or during hard exercise.
DILANNI Women Latex Waist Training Cincher Underbust Corset Body Shaper Waist Trainer
This plus size waist trainer gave the most dramatic shaping of the group while I had it on.
It felt more breathable than the Lover Beauty latex waist trainer. Still, Cleveland Clinic advises wearing waist trainers only occasionally, for a couple of hours at most, and not overnight or day after day.
The DILANNI model also has three rows of clips in the front for an adjustable fit. There’s also a cotton layer on the inside that will absorb your sweat as you’re wearing it, so it makes for a more comfortable experience.
The brand markets its thick latex for “thermal” effect, meaning it traps heat and makes you sweat more.
More sweat doesn’t mean more fat burned. It means more fluid lost, so drink plenty of water and take it off if you feel dizzy or overheated.
The CDC notes that people who lose about 1 to 2 pounds a week, through diet and activity, are more likely to keep it off. Rapid drops while wearing a trainer are water, not fat.
Leyiku’s Women’s Latex Underbust Waist Trainer Corset Body Shaper with 9 Steel Boned
The Leyiku’s Women’s Latex Underbust Waist Trainer is very similar to the DILANNI model, with the exception of being a little cheaper, depending on the size you get.
However, that doesn’t mean that you skip out on the quality of the product.
This model has three convenient rows of hooks for an adjustable fit.
It has a latex exterior and cotton interior and is durable and flexible.
One thing I noticed in the Leyiku model that the other models didn’t have was that the shape of the waist trainer, which stopped right below my bust, actually helped LIFT my bust. My chest looked perkier, and my waist looked smaller.
These were two excellent reasons to choose this model above the others.
YIANNA Neoprene Sauna Suit Tank Top Vest with Adjustable Shaper Waist Trainer Belt
The YIANNA model was a little different than the other plus size waist trainers. This one was a neoprene tank top that has a waist cincher that goes on top of it.
The adjustable waistband lets you change how tight it feels. Some people don’t like their waist compressors to include a bra, but I disagree.
I like mine to be connected because it makes my whole torso look better.
The neoprene makes for an entirely different experience with the waist cincher. I felt like I had a little more freedom of movement than I did with the other models.
Like the latex models, it traps heat and makes you sweat more. That’s water loss, not fat loss, so stay hydrated. One feature that this model had that the others did not is that it had an inside pocket to hold your phone or your mp3 player!
I hadn’t seen that on the other models, so if this is important to you during your workouts, then that would be reason enough to buy this product.
To Summarize…
Trying plus size waist trainers was an interesting experiment.
They didn’t help me lose weight and get in shape; diet and exercise did that. But I found some products that help my clothes fit the way I like.
It would be hard for me to choose just one product that I could recommend to anyone, because each one had it benefits and its drawbacks.
I hope this guide helps you choose a waist trainer for shaping, with realistic expectations.
Here are a few do’s and don’ts you need to consider when wearing a waist trainer.
- Do wear it only occasionally, for a couple of hours at most.
- Do take it off right away if you have trouble breathing, heartburn, numbness, leg swelling or dizziness.
- Don’t sleep in it or wear it on back-to-back days.
- Don’t wear latex if you have a latex allergy.
- Don’t rely on it for weight loss. For lasting results, focus on regular exercise and a healthy diet, and talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian.
- Don’t use one during pregnancy, or after giving birth, without your doctor’s okay.
